That night I taught six boys and two moms an improv class. The boys are in a program called Destination Imagination, and they will be competing in a few weeks. It was a total blast bringing the improv skills I mostly learned in San Francisco to a ranch home way up a snow covered gravel road far from any city. The books include Impro, by Keith Johnstone. He has a theater up in Calgary, a not too far drive when the roads are clear. Improv Wisdom was written by Patricia Ryan, one of my first Improv teachers at Stanford. Acting on Impulse is by Carol Hazenfield, my favorite teacher at Bay Area Theater Sports in San Francisco. The other two books are BATS and Loose Moose Theater compilations. The stuffed animals are useful for toss games that help build awareness and teamwork.
